GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
The GIF format is primarily used for displaying images from online sources such as the Internet. It only supports 256 colors, but has built-in compression to reduce the file size and be used to add quick and easy animation to the web pages. |
Jpeg (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
JPEG is a highly compressed graphics format that is useful for photographs and other images where there is a lot of color information. It allows you to set a balance between image quality and compression. |
PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
Devised as and alternative to the GIF format, but for the same use - delivery of online images - PNG handles 24-bit images and allows you to have transparent parts in your image but with smooth edges. PNG images can be used in Web pages, bur not all browsers support them and they can be quite big in size. |
Uncompressed
Uncompressed images have the highest level of quality. However don't expect to be able to store many uncompressed images on a small memory card. |
